ETHNOBOTANICAL/TRADITIONAL
In China, Lion’s Mane, Hericium erinaceus, has been historically known as Hóu Tóu GÇ, translating to Monkey Head Mushroom, and in Japan, Yamabushitake, translating to Mountain Monk Mushroom. “In Chinese and Japanese medical systems, it has traditionally been used to fortify the spleen, nourish the gut, and also as an anticancer drug” (Liu, Du, Wang, Yu, 2015). Interestingly, Lion’s Mane was and is still used as both a food and traditional medicine. According to TCM, by consuming Lion’s Mane, it is said to benefit all of the five internal Yin organs: Heart, Liver, Spleen, Kidney and Lung. In addition, Lion’s Mane was used “…for its effects on the central nervous system, and is used for insomnia, vacuity (weakness), and hypodynamia, which are characteristic symptoms of Qi deficiency in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)” (Spelman, Sutherland, Bagade, 2017).

Growth Substrate |
Hardwood Chips, Cottonseed hull. Why is this important? The growth substrate for Medicinal Mushrooms greatly alters the quantity of active medicinal compounds in the product. Lions Mane requires living hardwood to create the secondary metabolites that are medicinally beneficial to us, Lion’s Mane grown on grain and other substrates is inferior. |
Part Used | 100% Fruit Bodies.
Why is this important? The fruiting body of the mushroom contains the highest quantity of active medicinal compounds. Some manufacturers add the mushroom mycelium to the product as a filler, this is the root system of the mushroom (called hyphae) and has less medicinally active compounds. Our product is free from all fillers. |
